Comedian Mike Huckabee is back, just in time to capitalize on the royal wedding fever that’s been gripping Twitter all morning. Whether you were watching it on live telly or following along online, there was no way to escape the stream of wedding content featuring Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s nuptials. Like any appointment TV viewing these days, there were joke tweets. Lots of them. And like any good aspiring comedian, Huckabee had to get in on the act, to workshop a little material.
I like to imagine the former Arkansas governor bolting upright in his chair and grabbing his phone as his brain fired off the random connection between two different things that shared the same word. The link in the tweet isn’t even to a YouTube video of “We Are the Champions,” but to the Yahoo! Web page you get when you search videos for “queen we are the champions.” Queen band member Brian May was not in attendance at the wedding, but did fire off a quick congratulations to the happy couple on Instagram.
Near 500 likes at time of publication, Huckabee’s royal wedding tweet didn’t exactly take off as much as, say, this one comparing Pippa Middleton’s dress to a can of Arizona iced tea, or this one that possibly caught Harry admitting to some nerves. Huckabee, bless him, is trying, but the market doesn’t seem to hold much demand for his singular brand of connect-the-dots humor. “Stale!” replied one take-no-prisoners commenter. Hopefully this chilly reception won’t affect Huckabee’s plans to live-tweet Sunday evening’s Billboard Music Awards.
